Notice to all interested in the BPD Explorer Program:
This program has been temporarily suspended due to Covid restrictions as well as BPD staffing issues. We are not accepting any new applications at this time. Should that change, a new notice will be posted. Updated on 2-23-22.
The Bellingham Police Explorer Post is a part of the Volunteer Services Program within the Police Department. The post allows high school age young men and women the opportunity to explore and learn about a career in the criminal justice field while serving as a volunteer within the Police Department. The program is service oriented with Explorers helping people, assisting at community events, and aiding police officers with some of their work. The program builds confidence, discipline, and a sense of community.
Explorers are not paid, but their uniforms and equipment are provided by the city of Bellingham.
Each new Explorer is required to attend an Explorer Academy. Academies are held every 6 months.
What Will I Do?
Explorers will be trained and utilized in certain police operations.
In addition to the work aspect, Explorers together with their adult supervisors and Explorers from other posts, will have the opportunity for social activities such as dances, campouts, field trips, etc.
Typical Class Work
- Radio code procedures
- Police organization & procedure
- Career opportunities at the federal, state, and local level
- Community laws and ordinances
- Firearm safety
- Mock crime investigation
- Ride-a-long with officers
Qualifications
- Be in high school
- Normal to good health, family physicians certificate required
- Ability to work well with others, learn skills, and to follow directions of a supervisor
- Willingness to commit a minimum of 8 hours a month to assigned duties within the police department
Explorers are part of the Learning for Life Program.
