Completion Requirements for Youth Level 6 Personal Water Safety

  1. Front Crawl – 100 Yards
    • Stroke should basically be perfect with bilateral breathing, proper arm catch, mid-pull, finish and recovery.
    • The kick should be fluid with a 2, 4, or 6 beat cadence.
    • The student should perform a flip turn when they need to change directions.
  2. Front Crawl to Open Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without hesitation.
  3. Front Flip Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without hesitation.
  4. Elementary Backstroke – 100 Yards
    • The stroke should basically be perfect with proper arm catch, mid-pull, finish and recovery.
    • The kick should basically be a perfect whip kick.
    • The student should perform a back open turn when they need to change directions.
  5. Back Crawl – 50 Yards
    • Stroke should basically be perfect with good body roll, proper arm catch, mid-pull, finish and recovery.
    • The kick should be fluid with a 2, 4, or 6 beat cadence.
    • The student should perform a flip turn when they need to change directions.
  6. Backstroke Open Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without hesitation.
  7. Backstroke Flip Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without hesitation.
  8. Breaststroke – 50 Yards
    • Stroke should basically be perfect with proper arm catch, mid-pull, finish and recovery.
    • The kick should basically be a perfect whip kick.
    • Students should perform a breaststroke turn with a complete pull down when they change directions.
  9. Breaststroke Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without any hesitation and include a full underwater pull down.
  10. Sidestroke – 50 Yards
    • Stroke should basically be perfect with proper arm catch, mid-pull, finish and recovery.
    • The kick should basically be a perfect scissors kick.
    • The student should perform a side open turn when they need to change directions.
  11. Sidestroke Open Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without any hesitation.
  12. Butterfly – 50 Yards
    • Stroke should basically be perfect with proper arm catch, mid-pull, finish and recovery.
    • The kick should basically be a perfect dolphin kick.
    • The student should perform a butterfly turn when they need to change directions.
  13. Butterfly Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without any hesitation.
  14. HELP Position
    • Students will demonstrate how to conserve their body temperature in cold water by tucking their arms to their side and curling up in a ball.
  15. Huddle Position
    • Students will demonstrate how to conserve their body temperature in cold water by working in a group and huddling together.
  16. Feet First Surface Dive
    • Students will use a surface dive to submerge to the bottom of the pool from a treading water position.
  17. Tuck Surface Dive
    • Students will submerge and dive to the bottom of the pool while swimming forward.
  18. Pike Surface Dive
    • Students will submerge and dive to the bottom of the pool while swimming forward.
  19. Back Float – 5 Minutes
    • Students must demonstrate their ability to remain almost motionless with ease on their back for the full five minutes.
  20. Survival Float – 5 Minutes
    • Students will float as long as possible and then will lift their head up, take a breath, do a simple scissors kick and then float again.
    • The students must demonstrate their ability to do this skill with ease.
    • Students need to understand this skill should only be performed in warm water.
  21. Survival Swimming – 10 Minutes
    • Students will float as long as possible, then will lift their head up, take a breath, do a simple scissors kick followed by a large arm pull, then float again.
    • The students must demonstrate their ability to do this skill with ease.
    • Students need to understand this skill should only be performed in warm water.
  22. Tread Water Kicking Only – 2 Minutes
    • Students will tread water using either a modified whip or scissors kick or a rotary kick.
    • The students’ ears must remain above the water.
  23. Surface Dive and Retrieve Object
    • The students will swim forward and dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet and recover a 10 pound diving brick.

  25. Exit Skill I
    • Swim 500 yards continuously using any 3 strokes of your choice, swimming at least 50 yards of each stroke.
  26. Exit Skill II
    • Jump into deep water, perform a survival float for 5 minutes, roll onto back and perform a back float for 5 minutes.
  27. Exit Skill III
    • Perform a feet first surface dive, retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool at a minimum of 7 feet, return to surface and return to starting point.
