Work underway on City Hall's flag plaza

Repair work to fix tripping hazards, failing electrical

August 30, 2017 - by Amy Cloud, Communications and Outreach

Work has begun on a project to fix trip hazards and repair the failing electrical system at the Flag Plaza at Bellingham City Hall. The City's contractor for this repair work has set up perimeter fencing around the project site, including the Plaza and parking directly in front of City Hall at 210 Lottie Street.

What that means for City Hall customers and staff:

  • Access to City Hall via the main entrance on Lottie is restricted (i.e. closed);
  • Parking directly in front of City Hall is similarly restricted;
  • Public access to City Hall for the duration of this project will be via two entrances
    • From North Commercial Street
    • From Grand Avenue (access for those with physical disabilities)
  • Safety and accessibility will be improved by this work.

This work is reconstruction only, being done to address safety issues including trip hazards due to an uneven walking surfaces, areas of standing water and failing electrical systems.  The project will include replacing the brick pavers in the Flag Plaza as well as the in-ground lighting.  The appearance and function will remain unchanged: Flag poles and plaques honoring military services will remain in place, as will the existing benches.  Work should be completed in October.

 “We apologize for the short notice and realize this might create some challenges for City Hall patrons and staff,” said Clark Williams, Public Works supervisor. “We will do our best moving forward to keep everyone apprised of the status of the work via the City's website or Facebook page.”
