Honoring the fact that water is essential to life and vital to our cultural well-being, the City of Bellingham is partnering with the Whatcom Watersheds Information Network (WWIN) to celebrate “Whatcom Water Week” from Saturday, Sept. 15 through Saturday, Sept. 22.
A series of fun, free, family-friendly events throughout Whatcom County offer residents a chance to celebrate the importance of water. In all, there will be over 20 events to choose from, including some which require pre-registration. Bellingham Public Works is hosting these:
- Wednesday, Sept. 19 – wastewater treatment plant walking tour to learn how the City cleans and treats its wastewater. Tour begins at noon at the Post Point facility at 200 McKenzie Street. Participants should wear long pants, close-toe footwear and long-sleeve shirts.
- Thursday, Sept. 20 – habitat restoration tour walking tour to explore work occurring along Squalicum Creek. Tour begins at 6 p.m., starting from Sunset Pond Park, which is across James Street from the Sunset Pond Business Park.
- Thursday, Sept. 20 – demonstrations, displays and the BIG equipment used to help keep City water clean in front of City Hall, 210 Lottie Street, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Other events throughout Whatcom Water Week include:
- Run with the Chums 5k;
- Bellingham SeaFeast;
- International beach clean-up;
- Bellingham Public Library storytimes and
- Bellingham Technical College Fisheries and Aquaculture tour.
Whatcom Water Week is organized by WWIN, a diverse network of businesses, agencies, non-profits, educational institutions and citizens involved in water ecosystems education and outreach. The City of Bellingham participates in the WWIN mission to improve education, stewardship, information exchange and public involvement locally.
