Mayor signs Proclamation of Local Emergency

Will allow the City of Bellingham to be nimble during this rapidly changing situation.

March 12, 2020

A message from Bellingham Mayor Seth Fleetwood:

Today I have signed a Proclamation of Local Emergency in response to the COVID-19 outbreak in Whatcom County. This proclamation will allow the City of Bellingham to be nimble during this rapidly changing situation so we can make sure all available resources are committed to this event. This proclamation is being undertaken at this time to authorize City of Bellingham departments to enter into emergency contracts and avoid other lengthy processes, so as to ensure timely action to address the outbreak.

We continue to defer to the Whatcom County Health Department’s recommendations on COVID-19 response in our community. At this time, based on their recommendations, the City of Bellingham is cancelling or postponing non-essential City of Bellingham events and meetings with more than 10 people through the end of April, and we continue to monitor to see if further actions are necessary. We all need to do our part to protect our community, our families, and ourselves. Please refer to the Whatcom County Health Department for current recommended actions.
