City of Bellingham seeks artist for sidewalk project

Artwork will be added to street improvements to W. Maplewood Avenue

January 26, 2017 - by Darby Cowles, Senior Planner

The City of Bellingham is excited to announce an opportunity for artists or artist teams to design permanent artwork to be incorporated into the sidewalk as part of street improvements to W. Maplewood Avenue between Northwest and Alderwood Avenue. The street improvements include new curb, gutter, and sidewalks, bicycle lanes in both directions, and street lighting. The project is subject to the City's One Percent for the Arts ordinance, resulting in approximately $25,000 dedicated to the design, fabrication and installation of artwork into these improvements.

The primary goal of this project is to add aesthetic interest to the W. Maplewood corridor by incorporating artwork that celebrates and promotes neighborhood identity and pride. Artwork may be integrated into concrete flatwork, steel railings, or other surfaces along all or a portion of the improvement area, or in another method proposed by the artist/team. Artwork design, locations and installation methods will be determined in collaboration with the selected artist/team, Maplewood community and City staff.

The City is requesting interested parties respond to the Request for Qualifications no later than February 17, 2017 at 5:00 pm to be considered for this project.  For the complete Request for Qualifications and submittal requirements, visit:
