Orchard Drive Extension

Project Overview: ES-0440

The Orchard Drive Extension will provide two additional modal links for the City of Bellingham transportation system: an arterial linking the street grid east and west of Interstate 5 and the construction of another segment of the Bay to Baker Regional Trail System. The project will link the King Mountain Neighborhood, directly under the existing interstate highway. Currently planned developments in this area include 1,500 residential housing units and 40,000 square feet of commercial space which will add significantly to the future traffic volumes on James Street Road. The project will also alleviate traffic congestion near the regional hospital.

Update -November 2017

Accomplishments:  National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) permitting has begun and preparation of the Joint Aquatic Resources Permit Application (JARPA) has begun.  Design is moving toward 90% completion.
Next Milestones - JARPA approval and design completion.  Due to funding restrictions, construction is likely to occur in late 2019 or early 2020.
