West Maplewood Avenue Multimodal Improvements

​Project Overview: ES-0517

This project will improve pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle safety along West Maplewood Avenue between Northwest Ave and Alderwood Avenue.  The project will curb, gutter and sidewalks to the east side of the street, add bicycle lanes in both directions, and improve street lighting and accessibility.

The W. Maplewood Corridor has been identified as a high-priority multimodal connection by the Birchwood Neighborhood Plan, as well as the City of Bellingham Pedestrian and Bicycle Master plans.  The corridor serves children walking to Shuksan Middle and nearby Birchwood Elementary Schools.

Funding for this project comes from a $895,000 Federal Safe Routes to School Grant and City of Bellingham Transportation Benefit District No. 1 Funding.

Status - March 2019

Accomplishments:   Project physically complete September 11, 2018.  Art dedication ceremony and project walk-through held August 30, 2018.

Next Milestones:   Punchlist, completion of roadside restoration.
