City officials continue to gather
information and weigh in on the regulatory review process for the Gateway
Pacific Terminal, proposed to be located at Cherry Point north of Bellingham
in unincorporated Whatcom County.
The regulatory review process is being led by Whatcom County, the state
Department of Ecology and the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
The Gateway Pacific Terminal is proposed as a multi-modal, deep-water
terminal to provide storage and handling for the export and import of up to
54 million metric tons per year of dry bulk commodities. Application
materials for the proposed terminal describe operations that include 18
additional individual train trips (nine round trips) per day traveling
