Department Information

The Bellingham Public Library serves the residents of Bellingham and Whatcom County, circulating more than 1.6 million items annually to more than 49,000 registered cardholders. It is a department of the City of Bellingham and receives the majority of its funding from the city's general fund. Library operations are governed by the Library Board of Trustees, composed of five volunteer members appointed by the Mayor of Bellingham with the approval of the Bellingham City Council.

The Bellingham Public Library provides services in three library locations, on three college campuses and also offers extensive online services. Through a reciprocal use agreement, City of Bellingham residents also have access to the collections of the Whatcom County Library System and may borrow items from libraries worldwide via interlibrary loan service. Bellingham Public Library also participates in the One Card program, allowing anyone who lives, works or attends school in Whatcom County to get a library card at every public or academic library county-wide.
