SDE Feature Class
env_Coalmines shows the probable maximum extent of the workings of the mines and approximate schematic of the areas mined, as well as areas subject to historic mine prospecting claims in Bellingham WA. Primary source is the 1984 "Bellingham Abandoned Mine Land Survey - Final Report" completed by Tetra Tech, Inc. for the US Dept of Interior Office of Surface Mining, Denver Colorado. In addition to mapping mine extents, the areas mapped for the Bellingham Coal Mine No 1 include categories for subsidence class and stability class (from Exhibits 7A and 7B of the Tetra Tech report). A subsidence hazard classification is also included based on collaborative efforts of Bellingham staff and Geologists with mine hazard expertise. Some mines are included from areas beyond the extent of the Tetra Tech report – primary sources for these are geo-referenced historic mining company maps curated by WA State DNR.
To represent the spatial extent of areas mined or subject to historic prospecting claims, and identified geologic hazard categories of the surface areas above or adjacent to them.
