Director’s Report and Highlights October 21, 2008
Pamela Nyberg Kiesner, Director
Bellingham, Washington

See you at the Fairhaven Branch for our meeting on October 21st, 4:00 p.m.!

Labor Negotiations
We are all delighted to have reached agreement between Library/City management and our AFSCME 114 librarians; Lorna Klemanski, Michelle Barrett, and I will discuss our negotiations with you in Executive Session at the beginning of the meeting.

Fairhaven Branch Library
Our meeting is being held at the Fairhaven Branch Library for a few important reasons: to begin a new initiative of meeting in each of our facilities throughout the year; to provide a tour of Fairhaven so you are familiar with the areas of the building when we discuss the upcoming renovations; and, to provide you with an update on the renovation project. Donna Grasdock, our Branch Specialist will be on hand to give us a tour. Christine Perkins, David Edelstein, and Faye Hill will provide an update on the project, having just met with the architect team.

A New Central Library
David and I are interested in talking with you about several issues related to a new Central Library:

· the Waterfront, and having Board representation with me at all upcoming Waterfront meetings;
· Since the Board remains open to other sites, what other sites should we be reviewing?
· And, what is our planning timeline?

Library Budget
As you can imagine, the picture is changing frequently. This week all City Departments were asked to review their 2009 budgets and find more cuts. I’ll give you an update at the meeting.

Happy fall reading!
