Director’s Report and Highlights December 16, 2008 Pamela Nyberg Kiesner, Director Bellingham, Washington Greetings of the season! Our final meeting of 2008 includes several important items, including: Library Board Transitions David Edelstein is being recommended for a second term on the Library Board. Mayor Pike is bringing the appointment to City Council on Monday, December 15, for approval. This is the meeting when you elect, or re-elect, a Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson. Trustee Education Please welcome Suzanne Carlson-Prandini who will introduce you to, and provide fascinating facts about our book club kits. Suzanne provides leadership for this very popular program. Have you used one yet? You’ll want to get on the list if you haven’t! Strategic Planning In your packet is a draft of the Bellingham Public Library Strategic Plan for 2009-2011. A good plan is really always in draft form, so this is just the beginning of revising and refining it. Especially in these times, we will want to be able to turn on a dime (or a penny) if we are required to. The Bellingham Public Library has not had a Strategic Plan for many years, so it is timely to get one “on the books” that we can begin working with. Prior to our meeting, please take some time to read it and mark up your copy with comments and questions. We will take enough time at the meeting to review the plan very carefully and then, to receive your approval to proceed. Book Drop at Community Food Coop? We’ve been asked to provide a book drop at the new Community Food Coop on Cordata Boulevard, just a couple of blocks away from our WCC Connection. We want to explain some of the details in setting this up, how this would work, what library resources would be involved in providing this service, and share ideas for a book drop policy with you. Public comment period At your suggestion from the last meeting, the public comment period has moved towards the end of the meeting, right before “Reports”. We thought this might be a better time for members of the public who may not have been able to arrive right at 4:00 p.m. Let’s see how this works. Happy Holidays and a Merry New Year!
