Other Sources of Waterfront Information

Do you have ideas Waterfront Futures should investigate? If you know about or come across waterfront areas/approaches that intrigue you, let us know. The Group will check them out. We invite you to submit your ideas, suggestions, comments that will help move this process forward successfully.

Please send your suggestions to

What makes a great waterfront?
What are the design principles?
And what can Bellingham learn from successful waterfronts around the country?
We have found three websites that have been particularly helpful in educating us about waterfront redevelopment and design:

Waterfront Revitalization for Small Cities

St. John’s New Brunswick website

They have an interesting FAQ drafted by the Saint John Waterfront Development Partnership.  This might be a useful model in terms of informing the public.

The Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation

This group really focused on public input and participation (see Policy Statement towards the end of the summary).  However, it is interesting to note that, per the attached Sierra Club Press Release, some still asserted that public input was missing from the waterfront plans.

Portland and Oregon City, Oregon

Suisun, California

This is an example of redevelopment projects undertaken by a smaller community. Some similarities in a dredging of a waterway, mixed use, integrating a multi-modal facility, live/work businesses, two venues for theatre and festivals/events, and a waterfront promenade.

Portland, Maine

Attached is an article on the waterfront redevelopment in Portland, Maine, which includes some brief case studies on the topic. Portland is currently considering a complete change on a large section of the waterfront housing the current ferry terminal.

Melbourne, Australia has taken a historical area and redeveloped it in a sustainable fashion with ‘places for everyone.’ They have established a development authority whose aim is to dovetail development with a responsible, integrated and commercially viable approach to environmental management.

Kirkland, Wa – Not much on their city website, but real estate people spoke about Carillon Point which was built where the old ship building business of Peter Kirk, founder of Kirkland, had his business. Melds the historical character with mixed use.

Monterey, CA – Best web access for history of Monterey’s waterfront development
