Waterfront Futures Project

The Waterfront Futures Project is a visioning and master planning process for Bellingham’s future waterfront redevelopment. Waterfront cities all over the world are engaged at various stages in redefining their waterfront areas. In Bellingham, the Waterfront Futures Group was created in early 2003 to carry forward this process and to create a blueprint to guide waterfront development for current and future generations.

Throughout the entire 18 month visioning and planning process, the Group will be educating themselves and the community, informing the public of their progress, and reaching out for public input and comment.

Another Waterfront Perspective
“…make the wisest and best long-term uses of waterfront resources for maximum public benefit.”

The Waterfront Center

Beginning in June 2004 the Group will present the entire waterfront plan for public review and approval. Elements of the plan will be available for public review prior to June 2004 as they are completed.

Three work groups lead by members of the Waterfront Futures Group will explore the following areas: Jobs and the Economy; Natural Systems and the Environment; and Character, Uses and Design.

The planning area (photo, map) extends 11.5 miles from the Urban Area Growth Boundary to the north (Cliffside) along the waterfront to Chuckanut Bay.
