The Waterfront Futures Group Mission

The Waterfront Futures Group will lead a cooperative process that takes a fresh look at our waterfront and recognizes the diverse perspectives of our community. Our mission is to create a compelling vision for current and future generations and identify the steps to get us there.

Upon the formation of an inter-local agreement establishing the Waterfront Futures Project, the Port and City of Bellingham each appointed five members to the Waterfront Futures Group. The Group selected an eleventh member to represent the Lummi Nation. Two Planning Commission members serve as Liaisons to the Group. This citizen task force serves on a volunteer basis. The project director is a city employee. The Waterfront Futures Project is housed in the Port offices at 1801 Roeder Avenue in Bellingham. They can be contacted at 360-676-2500 or by e-mail: pdecker@cob.org or aroberts@cob.org.

Waterfront Futures Group members decided to divide into three sub groups so as to address several focus areas concurrently. They formed three "work groups" and adopted work group names to describe their particular focus.

Each Work Group is researching current waterfront conditions, trends, and future possibilities in one of three focus areas: 1) Jobs and the Economy, 2) Natural Systems and the Environment, and 3) Character Uses and Design.
