Completion Requirements for Youth Level 6 Fitness Swimming

  1. Front Crawl - 100 Yards
    • Stroke should basically be perfect with bilateral breathing, proper arm catch, mid-pull, finish and recovery.
    • The kick should be fluid with a 2, 4, or 6 beat cadence.
    • The student should perform a flip turn when they need to change directions.
  2. Front Crawl to Open Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without hesitation.
  3. Front Flip Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without hesitation.
  4. Elementary Backstroke - 100 Yards
    • The stroke should basically be perfect with proper arm catch, mid-pull, finish and recovery.
    • The kick should basically be a perfect whip kick.
    • The student should perform a back open turn when they need to change directions.
  5. Back Crawl - 50 Yards
    • Stroke should basically be perfect with good body roll, proper arm catch, mid-pull, finish and recovery.
    • The kick should be fluid with a 2, 4, or 6 beat cadence.
    • The student should perform a flip turn when they need to change directions.
  6. Backstroke Open Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without hesitation.
  7. Backstroke Flip Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without hesitation.
  8. Breaststroke - 50 Yards
    • Stroke should basically be perfect with proper arm catch, mid-pull, finish and recovery.
    • The kick should basically be a perfect whip kick.
    • Students should perform a breaststroke turn with a complete pull down when they change directions.
  9. Breaststroke Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without any hesitation and include a full underwater pull down.
  10. Sidestroke - 50 Yards
    • Stroke should basically be perfect with proper arm catch, mid-pull, finish and recovery.
    • The kick should basically be a perfect scissors kick.
    • The student should perform a side open turn when they need to change directions.
  11. Sidestroke Open Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without any hesitation.
  12. Butterfly - 50 Yards
    • Stroke should basically be perfect with proper arm catch, mid-pull, finish and recovery.
    • The kick should basically be a perfect dolphin kick.
    • The student should perform a butterfly turn when they need to change directions.
  13. Butterfly Turn
    • The turn should be smooth and fluid without any hesitation.
  14. Demonstrates Lane Etiquette
    • Choosing the right lane, circle swimming, touching the feet, passing, etc.
  15. Uses a pace clock
    • Using the clock for send offs.
  16. Uses a pull buoy
    • Using the buoys to isolate the arms.
  17. Uses fins
    • Using the fins to work the legs, move faster, etc.
  18. Uses hand paddles
    • Using paddles to work the arms, fine tune hand positions, etc.
  19. Describes how to set up a fitness program
    • Warm ups, stretching, aerobic set, muscular development sets, cool downs
  20. Demonstrates various training techniques
    • Over distance, Fartlek, interval sets, repetition, sprints, straight sets, negative split sets, descending sets, ladders, pyramids, broken swims, dry-land training.
  21. Calculates heart rate
    • Use a pace clock to find and calculate their heart rate.
    • Can find the calculate heart rate range for themselves.
  22. Applies principle of water exercise
    • Buoyancy, resistance, speed, and type of movement.
  23. Exit Skill I
    • Swim 500 yards continuously using the strokes in the following order: front crawl 100 yards, back crawl 100 yards, breaststroke 50 yards, elementary backstroke 50 yards, sidestroke 50 yards, butterfly 50 yards, and choice of stroke 100 yards.
  24. Exit Skill II - Coopers 12 Minute Swimming Test
    • Student swims for twelve minutes nonstop on the first and last day and compares the number of laps. Unfortunately, the chart on page SWS p.p. 189 only goes down to 13 years of age.
