Completion Requirements for Youth Level 4

  1. Compact or Stride Dive (SWS p.p. 107)
    • The students should enter the water in a 45 degree angle with their head pressed between their arms and their body extended.
  2. Swim Underwater (SWS p.p. 58)
    • Student must swim at least 3 body lengths (~12 feet)
  3. Feet First Surface Dive (SWS p.p. 55)
    • Student starts off by treading water, and then uses a strong scissors or breaststroke kick to rise out of the water.
    • Student should remain in a streamline position until they begin to slow down. Then he/she should press up.
  4. Survival Float 1 Minute (SWS p.p. 236)
    • Student will begin with a jellyfish float.
    • In order to take breath, student will slowly lift arms to about shoulder height and prepare to scissors kick.
    • After pressing back with arms and kicking he/she will take a breath and then return to the jellyfish float.
    • Note: Remind students to only use this in warm water.
  5. Back Float 1 Minute (SWS p.p. 46)
    • Students must demonstrate this skill in deep water with limited motion.
  6. Open Turn on Front (SWS p.p. 112 & 117)
  7. Open Turn on Back (SWS p.p. 113)
    • Students must demonstrate using any stroke on the back, turn at the wall, and then glide two body lengths before stroking.
  8. Treading Water 1 Minute (SWS p.p. 47)
    • Student may use a modified scissors, breaststroke, or rotary kick whip and sculling arms.
    • The head must stay about the water.
  9. Front Crawl 25 Yards (WSI Manual p.p. 194 & 195)
    • The body must be 15 degrees or less in angle with only an occasional side to side motion of trunk and legs.
    • The arms must recover above the water.
    • The hands must enter above the head with the fingertips first.
    • The arms must bend during the power phase.
    • The arms must finish at the hips.
    • The flutter kick must be continuous and a moderate splash is acceptable.
    • The student must blow bubbles and breathe to the side. No looking straight forward.
  10. Breaststroke 15 Yards (WSI Manual p.p. 194 & 195)
    • The body must be 30 degrees or less during the glide.
    • The hands must pull outside the shoulder and can go past the shoulder but not the waist.
    • The legs must bend simultaneously but the knees may extend outside the hips and toes.
    • The ankles may bend a little during the power phase.
    • An occasional scissors or flutter kick is acceptable.
    • The stroke must have the basic form of pull, breath, kick and glide.
  11. Butterfly 15 Yards (WSI Manual p.p. 194 & 195)
    • The body may be up to 30 degrees from the surface but the face must be in the water.
    • The arms must recover above the water but may exit the water above the waist.
    • The legs may bend at the knees during up beet and the feet may break the surface occasionally.
    • The stroke must have the basic form.
  12. Back Crawl 25 Yards (WSI Manual p.p. 194 & 195)
    • The body must be 15 degrees or less in angle with only an occasional side to side motion of trunk and legs.
    • The arms must recover above the water.
    • The hands must enter above the head with the little finger first.
    • The arms must bend during the power phase.
    • The arms must finish at the hips.
    • The flutter kick must be continuous and a moderate splash is acceptable.
  13. Elementary Backstroke 15 Yards (WSI Manual p.p. 194 & 195)
    • The body must be 30 degrees.
    • The hips can be bent; the chin tucked, and ears out of the water.
    • The hands may break the surface during recovery.
    • The arms can extend above or below the shoulder.
    • The power phase may end at waist level.
    • The legs must bend simultaneously but the knees may extend outside the hips and toes.
    • The ankles may bend a little during the power phase.
    • An occasional scissors or flutter kick is acceptable.
    • Occasional breath holding is acceptable.
    • There needs to be at least a minimal glide.
  14. Swim on Side w/ Scissors Kick –15 Feet (WSI Manual p.p. 194 & 195)
    • The body must be on its side.
    • The bottom arm must extend over-over head with the top arm against the side. There is no arm stroke.
    • Must have a rudimentary scissors kick.
    • Any type of breathing pattern is acceptable.
    • The student may use support if necessary.
  15. Discuss Rules for Safe Diving
    • Discuss our diving board rules and explain.
  16. Compact Jump from Height w/ PFD
    • Student should cross hold the neck of their PFD as they enter the water.
    • Student should cross their legs as they enter the water.
  17. Throwing Assist (SWS p.p. 241 & 242)
    • The student must demonstrate a throwing assist.
  18. Care for Conscious Choking Victim (SWS p.p. 253 & 254)
    • The student will CHECK the scene and the victim to see if it is safe.
    • The student will send to some to CALL 911.
    • The student will offer to help and will provide care by giving abdominal thrusts.
  19. Exit Skill I
    • Student must perform a feet-first entry into chest-deep water, swim 25 yards, maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water, and swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards.
  20. Exit Skill II
    • Student must swim breaststroke 15 yards, tread water for 1 minute, and swim back crawl for 25 yard
