Student must jump ahead without fear or assistance into the deep
water.
Sitting or Kneeling Dive (SWS p.p. 106)
Student must enter the water with their head between their arms.
Student must enter the water head first.
Submerge and Recover an Item
From chest depth water, students must pick up an item off the
bottom.
Student may not use goggles for this exercise.
Bob – 5 times (SWS p.p. 43)
Student must exhale underwater and inhale about water.
The head must be fully submerged.
Rotary Breathing – 5 times (WSI Manual p.p. 64)
Student will exhale underwater with the body in a horizontal
position and then turn to the side to inhale.
Front glide w/ 2 Kicks – 2 body lengths (WSI Manual p.p. 65)
Student must be able to travel nonstop with their head in the
water.
Student must do this exercise twice using two different kicks.
Survival float – 30 seconds in deep water (SWS p.p. 236)
Student must float with face in the water and bubbles.
Student’s arms should press down to lift their head in the water
and then immediately go relaxed again.
Back glide – w/ 2 Kicks – 2 body lengths (WSI Manual p.p. 65)
Student must be able to travel nonstop with their faces out of
the water.
Student must do this exercise twice using two different kicks.
Back float – 30 seconds (SWS p.p. 46)
Student must remain relatively motionless in a supine position.
It is OK if the student’s face is underwater.
The student may use some small arm or leg motions to remain
stable.
Change position from vertical to horizontal on front (WSI Manual
p.p. 66)
Without assistance the student must go demonstrate in deep
water.
Change position from vertical to horizontal on back (WSI Manual p.p.
66)
Without assistance the student must go demonstrate in deep
water.
Tread water – 30 seconds (SWS p.p. 47)
Student must keep head above water but may use any combination
of arm and leg motions.
Front Crawl – 15 yards (WSI Manual p.p. 193)
The student’s body must be at less then 30 degree angle with
some rudimentary body roll.
The student may have some side to side motion in the trunk and
legs.
The student’s arms must come out of the water (note not purely
ARC)
The student may have straight arm recovery.
The student must have a good flutterkick. An occasional bicycle
kick is acceptable.
The student’s face must be in the water unless taking a breath.
The student may breathe to the front or the side as needed.
Butterfly kick and body motion – 15 feet (WSI Manual p.p. 193)
The student’s body moves in a dolphin-like motion.
The student’s legs move with simultaneous leg actions
Back Crawl – 15 Yards (WSI Manual p.p. 193)
The student’s body must be at less then 30 degree angle with
some rudimentary body roll.
The student’s ears may have their ears out of the water, the
chin on their chest, and the hips may be bent.
The student may have some side to side motion in the trunk and
legs.
The student’s arms must come out of the water.
The arms may be straight during the power phase.
The student must have a good flutter kick. An occasional bicycle
kick is acceptable.
Student may occasionally hold their breath.
Discuss general water safety rules and rules for safe diving
Discuss “Think so you don’t sink.”
Discuss “Reach or throw, don’t go.”
Discuss “Learn to dive properly from a qualified instructor.”
Discuss “Obey all posted rules and no diving signs.”
Discuss “Never dive in shallow water or into above-ground
pools.”
PFD – Wear and enter the water (SWS p.p. 215)
Student must be able to pick out and properly put on an
appropriate lifejacket.
Student may enter the water from a jump, a ladder, or from the
stairs.
PFD – HELP position – 1 minute (SWS p.p. 238)
Student should draw the knees up to the chest with their face
out of the water.
Student’s upper arms should squeeze their side and lover arms
should be across the chest.
PFD – Huddle position – 1 minute (SWS p.p. 238)
The student should form a ring with their arms over each others’
shoulders.
Discuss putting smaller children in the middle for warmth.
Reaching Assist (SWS p.p. 243
Student needs to brace themselves on the deck and reach out with
an arm to grasp the victim. Then they need to pull them to safety.
Discuss how to use equipment.
Discuss Check-Call-Care (SWS p.p. 230)
Student should have an introduction to the concept of checking
first, calling seconds, and then providing care.
Exit Skill I
Student should jump into chest deep water from the side, swim
front crawl for 15 yards with face in the water and rhythmic
breathing patter (to front or to side), maintain position by
treading or floating for 30 seconds and swim back crawl 15 yards.
