Students must enter and exit safely using ladder, steps or side.
Submerge Mouth, Nose, and Eyes
Students must be comfortable putting their mouth, nose, and eyes in
the water.
Blow Bubbles through Mouth and Nose
Students must blow bubbles underwater for at least three seconds.
Open Eyes and Recover an Object
Students must recover a submerged object with eyes open underwater at
least two times.
Front Float w/ Support & Recovery - 5 Seconds
With minimal assistance, student must remain motionless with arms
extended, body fairly flat, and legs at the surface. (ARC says face
could be out of water)
Students must be able to recover to standing position.
Back Float w/ Support & Recover – 5 Seconds
With minimal assistance, students must remain motionless with arms
extended, body fairly flat, and stomach at the surface.
Students must be able to recover to standing position.
Change Direction
Student must change direction of travel while walking or paddling.
Roll Over
Students roll over from front to back.
Students roll over from back to front.
Explore Treading Water Arms
Students will explore different arm and hand movements in the water.

Students use alternating arm action while being supported or walking.
Students use simultaneous arm action while being supported or walking.
Alternating Arms on Front w/ Support – 5 Feet
Student must propel themselves 5 feet using alternating arms while
supported by instructor or equipment.
Simultaneous Arms on Front w/ Support – 5 Feet
Student must propel themselves 5 feet using simultaneous arms while
supported by instructor or equipment.
Alternating Legs on Front w/ Support – 5 Feet
Student must propel themselves 5 feet using alternating legs while
supported by instructor or equipment.
Simultaneous Legs on Front w/ Support – 5 Feet
Student must propel themselves 5 feet using simultaneous legs while
supported by instructor or equipment.
Swim on Front w/ Support – 5 Feet
Student must propel themselves 5 feet using any combination of arms
and legs while supported by instructor or equipment.
Alternating Arms on Back w/ Support – 5 Feet
Student must propel themselves 5 feet using alternating arms while
supported by instructor or equipment.
Simultaneous Arms on Back w/ Support – 5 Feet
Student must propel themselves 5 feet using simultaneous arms while
supported by instructor or equipment.

Discuss Water Safety Rules
Be Cool, follow the rules.
Always swim with a buddy in a supervised area.
Wear a PFD in the Water
Discuss how to size a PFD
Student will don a PFD and enter the water with it on properly.
Recognize a Swimmer in Distress
Student should be able to recognize a swimmer in distress.
Discuss how to get Help
Student should know whom they should turn to for help including
lifeguards, parents, and 911.
Exit Skill I
Student will enter the water unassisted, move 5 yards, bob 5 times to
chin level, and then safely exit the water.
Students may move by walking, wall crawling, or swimming.
Exit Skill II
Student will float on front for 3 seconds, roll to back , and then
float on back for 3 seconds.
All of these skills are done with assistance and support.
