Completion Requirements for Preschool Level 3

  1. 5 Bobs (fully submerged)
    • Student must fully submerge 5 times in a rhythmic manner.
    • Student must fully exhale underwater and inhale above the water.
  2. Recover object – Chest Deep
    • Student must recover an object off the bottom of the pool that is at chest deep water for them with their hand.
    • The student may not use goggles and must demonstrate their ability to open their eyes underwater.
  3. Rotary breathing with support
    • Student must demonstrate their ability to exhale underwater, turn their head to side, take a breath and then return his or her face to the water to blow bubbles.
    • The breathing must be smooth without gasping for breath.
  4. Survival float, 6 seconds
    • Student float limply with hands and feet dangling, take a breath with an arm pull, kick and then return to a floating position.
    • The kick may be sloppy and indistinct.
  5. Front glide and flutter kick, 6 feet
    • Student must be in a streamlined position with their face in the water throughout the exercise.
    • The flutter kick must provide good propulsion.
  6. Back float, 6 seconds
    • Student must remain in a supine position with his or her ears in the water.
    • Some arm motion or a slight kick is acceptable.
  7. Back glide and flutter kick, 6 feet
    • Student must remain in a supine position with his or her ears in the water.
    • The body may be up to 45 degrees but the face must stay out of the water.
    • The arms may be at the side or along the head.
  8. Front crawl, 6 feet
    • The body may be up to 45 degrees but the face must be in the water.
    • The arms must move in an alternating fashion but do not have to break the surface during recovery.
    • The kick must provide good propulsion but some bicycle kicking is acceptable.
    • Student must exhale underwater.
  9. Finning arms on back, 6 feet
    • Student must remain in a supine position with his or her ears in the water.
    • The arms must provide good propulsion.
    • The student may use a small kick for propulsion.
  10. Alternating arms on back with support
    • Student may walk backwards or float in a supine position with support and move their arms in an alternative fashion.
  11. Explore treading water arms with support
    • Student may stand or be supported as they experiment with sculling motions.
  12. Discuss general water safety rules
    • Discuss pool rules such as running, showering, etc.
    • Talk about “Look before you leap.”
  13. PFD: enter the water
    • Student should be able to pick out and put on the appropriate PFD.
    • The student may enter from the side, the steps, or the beach.
  14. PFD: HELP position
    • Student should understand this is to stay warm in cold water by themselves.
    • The student must curl into a ball with their head out of the water.
  15. PFD: Huddle position
  16. Jump into 3 ½ feet water from the side
