Completion Requirements for Parent / Child A

  1. Getting Wet
    • Parent and child sit on deck and get water on each other’s bodies by playing with toys, washcloths, sprinkling can or cups.
    • Parent supports the child and encourages the student to kick the water while sitting on the edge of the pool.
  2. Water Entry
    • Parent lifts the child into the water and submerges child to chin level.
    • Parent places the child in hip straddle position and enters the pool using beach or steps.
  3. Explore the Pool (was called shallow water exploration and wall walking)
    • Child moves around the pool to observe different depths and parts of the pool with close parental supervision.
    • Parent places child in a face-to-face or side-to side position and travels around the teaching area.
    • Child travels along the pool wall while parent provides support and supervision.
  4. Working on Cues
    • Child responds to simple cues to respond such as 1-2-3-Go.
  5. Front Float with Support
    • Child explores floating in a prone position with support from parents.
    • Child’s face may be in or out of the water.
  6. Front Glide with Support (was part of pass to parent and pass to instructor)
    • Child explores gliding in a prone position with support from parent.
    • Child’s face may be in or out of the water.
  7. Kick on Front with Assistance
    • Child flutter kicks on front with assistance from parent
    • The child can still bicycle kick.
  8. Back Float with Support
    • Child explores floating in a supine position with support from parents.
    • Child’s ears may be in or out of the water.
  9. Black Glide with Support (was called back passes)
    •  Child explores gliding in a supine position with support from parent.
    • Child’s ears may be in or out of the water.
  10. Kick on Back with Assistance
    • Child flutter kicks on back with assistance from parent.
    • The child can still bicycle kick.
  11. Blowing Bubbles
    • Child explores moving light objects that float along the surface of the water with his/her breath.
    • Child explores blowing bubbles underwater with mouth and nose submerged.
  12. Underwater Exploration
    • Child explores submerging mouth, nose, and eyes underwater.
  13. Rolling From Back to Front with Support
    • Child explores changing from back to front with support from parents.
  14. Rolling from Front to Back with Support
    • Child explores changing from front to back with support from parents.
  15. Using a Lifejacket  (was called Intro to PFDs)
    • Parents are given information about how to properly choose a US Coast Guard approved PFD.
    • Parents put a US Coast Guard approved PFD on the child.
  16. Jump from Wall with Assistance
    • Child jumps into the water from either a sitting or standing position with assistance from parent.
  17. Water Exit/Lifting Out
