Completion Requirements for Parent / Child A

  1. Getting Wet
    • Parent and child sit on deck and get water on each other’s bodies by playing with toys, washcloths, sprinkling can or cups.
    • Parent supports the child and encourages the student to kick the water while sitting on the edge of the pool.
  2. Water Entry
    • Parent lifts the child into the water and submerges child to chin level.
    • Parent places the child in hip straddle position and enters the pool using beach or steps.
  3. Explore the Pool
    • Child moves around the pool to observe different depths and parts of the pool with close parental supervision.
    • Parent places child in a face-to-face or side-to side position and travels around the teaching area.
    • Child travels along the pool wall while parent provides support and supervision.
  4. Working on Cues
    • Child responds to simple cues to respond such as 1-2-3-Go.
  5. Front Float with Support
    • Child explores floating in a prone position with support from parents.
    • Child’s face may be in or out of the water.
  6. Front Glide with Support
    • Child explores gliding in a prone position with support from parent.
    • Child’s face may be in or out of the water.
  7. Leg Action on Front with Support
    • Parent moves the legs in a way that is natural and comfortable for the child, either alternating or simultaneous actions.
  8. Passing from Instructor to Parent
    • On the parent's cue, instructor will gently glide and release the child to the parent.
  9. Back Float with Support
    • Child explores floating in a supine position with support from parents.
    • Child's ears may in or out of the water.
  10. Back Glide with Support
    • Child explores gliding in a supine position with support from parent
    • Child's ears may be in or out of the water.
  11. Leg Action on Back with Support
    • Parent moves backward gliding the child while moving legs in a natural and comfortable direction for the child.
  12. Blowing Bubbles
    • Child explores moving light objects that float along the surface of the water with his/her mouth.
    • Child explores blowing bubbles underwater with mouse and nose submerged.
  13. Underwater Exploration
    • Child explores submerging mouth, nose and eyes underwater.
  14. Rolling from Back to Front with Support
    • Child explores changing from back to front with support from parents.
  15. Rolling from Front to Back with Support
    • Child explores changing from front to back with support from parents.
  16. Using a Lifejacket
    • Parents are given information about how to properly choose a US Coast Guard approved PFD.
    • Parents put a US Coast Guard approved PFD on the child.
  17. Water Safety Topics
    • Importance of knowing first aid and CPR
    • General water safety around the home
    • Sun Safety
    • Recreational water illnesses
  18. Water Exit/Lifting Out
    • Parent lifts child out of the water, then exits the pool while maintaining supervision.
