Parklets provide urban areas with additional public outdoor spaces. They are typically financed and maintained by adjacent buildings, and take up one or more parking spaces to provide seating, bike parking and meeting places for the general public. Parklets that have innovative and well-planned designs can add character, artistic flare, and natural foliage to the urban built environment.
Bellingham's first parklet was installed adjacent to La Fiamma Pizza on Railroad Avenue in August 2012. It was made possible through a partnership with Sustainable Connections and local businesses. The purpose of the pilot was to test various criteria and rules, develop long-term management recommendations, gauge the use and public response; as well as, establish a parklet application process and fees for future parklet construction.
