This project was initiated by city staff to allow periodic updates to various chapters of the Comprehensive Plan including the addition of the Environment and Economic Development Chapters. Following State action delaying the deadline for Whatcom County to 2016, the update scope was revised. See the revised version below for the current scope of the project in 2011 and 2012.

August 15, 2011 - City Council approved a revised Bellingham Comprehensive Plan Update - Content and Process Outline based on State legislation delaying the due date for Whatcom County to 2016.
June 2, 2011 - The Planning Commission held a public hearing to consider the proposed amendments to both the Introduction and Goals and Policies Chapters. No recommendation was made so that these chapters can continue to evolve, if necessary, throughout the update process.
February 7, 2011 - The City Council held a work session to further consider which Comprehensive Plan Amendments will become part of the 2011 docket, and approved the inclusion of this proposal in the Planning Department's 2011 work program through Resolution 2011-03.

* Note: Under the Growth Management Act, cities may only make amendments to the comprehensive plan, or the neighborhood plans, once a year. The due date for proposals to amend neighborhood plans is December 1st of each year.
