Bellingham's Local Historic Preservation Ordinance (BMC 17.90) identifies improvements, objects, features, and sites within the City that reflect special elements of Bellingham's architectural, cultural, archeological, aesthetic, and historical heritage. Since that time, a number of buildings, including several that are owned by the City, have been listed in the Local Historic Register (PDF).
One example of adaptive reuse is the historic Fairhaven Fire Station No. 2, located at 1314 Harris Ave., was surplused by the City in 2002 using a special process, requiring that it be listed on the Local Historic Register (PDF) and rehabilitated according to Local Historic Preservation Ordinance (BMC 17.90).
Properties listed on the Local Landmark Registry may be eligible for tax savings through the City's Special Valuation Program.
