The City of Bellingham and Port of Bellingham joined forces to create a master plan to guide the redevelopment of Bellingham's downtown waterfront. The 137 acre parcel was acquired by the Port early in 2005 after decades of industrial use. The 20-year vision: a new city neighborhood with homes, shops, offices and light industry, as well as parks and promenades, a healthy shoreline habitat along Bellingham Bay, and a new marina.
This extensive planning effort has been ongoing since 2005, and a Waterfront District Master Plan and accompanying development regulations is anticipated to be completed in 2008. Background documents and information is available in the New Whatcom section.
The draft EIS for the Waterfront District has been released for public comment by the SEPA Responsible Official for the Port of Bellingham The EIS analyzes a range of no-action (remain in industrial use), low density, medium density and high density development options for two time periods 2016 and 2026. Although each density analysis forecasts acreage for parks or certain transportation improvements, the Port and City expect to "mix and match" elements from each of the alternatives in the final master plan, based upon information learned from the EIS.
Due to the community wide significance of this project, the Bellingham Herald has allowed the Port to submit weekly project updates for the paper. In addition, a history of articles regarding the waterfront redevelopment is available on the Bellingham Herald's website.
