Planning is responsible for the development and administration of programs that protect critical areas and for directing the manner in which appropriate development occurs along the marine shoreline. Department staff coordinates with other city departments, state and federal agencies, and works with applicants during the local project review and permitting process. Planning manages the local review and approval for development subject to the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA).
The City of Bellingham is updating its current Shoreline Master Program. The City began this process in November 2005 and issued a DRAFT 2005 SMP in December, 2005. Since that time, the City has revised its DRAFT Shoreline Master Program significantly.
