The City of Bellingham Street centerline/Transportation is intended to depict street address ranges and classifications, and link to street structure information stored in the Hansen Inventory Management System. The Street centerline file, available on the web site (www.cob.org/gis), represents platted streets whether constructed or not along with many private level streets and roads within and surrounding the City of Bellingham. The native format of the data is ArcInfo coverage and is updated on a daily basis with shape file exports on a weekly basis. Files on the web site are update monthly, normally at the beginning of the month. The shape file data set is designed to meet specific City of Bellingham business needs that don't require an exact copy or geometric replication of the production ArcInfo coverage data set. Annotation and other related property features are purposely left out of the shape file data set.
The Street centerline GIS layer was developed to represent street traveled way classifications and address ranges. Address ranges are set to the complete 100 block level s and are only broken if bisected by another street. The infrastructure is tied to the Hansen Inventory Management System using specific user and system-defined attributes. Map data shown is a representation based on GPS collection, construction plan interpretation, field location, aerial photography approximation and Kroll map digitization. In some cases the mapped element has been adjusted to represent a clearer cartographic representation and does not necessarily give a true geographic location. The accuracy of this data varies and should not be used for precise measurement or calculations.
The coverage was originally (1991) digitized in AutoCAD from 1:2400 Kroll map pages. The digitized quarter section drawings were adjusted to known section and quarter section coordinates. In 1995, the AutoCAD maps were again adjusted to best fit with surveyed centerline data. In 1996, the AutoCAD information was converted to ArcInfo from three different sources: Tiger data, 911 data, and the converted centerlines from the original AutoCAD files. New information is entered when new plat information is received using coordinate geometry. The information is continually updated and enhanced as we receive new source data and correction information.
