The City of Bellingham changed all its telephone numbers early in 2008, as part of installing a new, more efficient telephone system.
The new system ensures reliable communications and continued telephone access to city services for residents and businesses.
"Reliable telecommunications systems and services are critical for effective city government operation," Bellingham Mayor Dan Pike said. "The new system allows us to take advantage of the features today's telephones offer and prevent telephone service disruptions."
Pike said the city's telephone systems were 10-16 years old, leaving city officials unable to take advantage of modern telecommunications practices. The switch to new telephone numbers and a more modern system means improved call handling and communications among city staff and with the public. The need to replace the aging telephone systems to ensure reliable communications has been discussed as part of budget planning since 2003.
