Improvements
are needed surrounding the I-5/ Bakerview Road interchange to support
economic development in the fast growing area of Bellingham . The long-term
plan calls for a full re-build of the interchange that is not financially
viable now. The current plan uses lower-cost alternatives that will still
allow the area to grow and provide improved circulation.
Modifications to the existing West Bakerview Overpass will include
installation of dual left-turn lanes at Dover/Fred Meyer western driveway to
Bakerview, installation of new westbound through lane from Pacific Highway
to Maplewood, construction of a new dedicated right-turn lane from the
overpass to the northbound I-5 on-ramp at Maplewood, and re-channelize
overpass travel lanes to accommodate two lanes of westbound travel with
turn-lanes at on/off-ramps and intersections.
This project represents an impressive partnership working together to
implement solutions that will result in a cost effective, long-term mobility
benefit and economic development opportunity for the region. Funding for the
project will consist of WSDOT, Transportation Improvement Board (TIB),
Whatcom County Economic Development Investment (EDI), Whatcom County Road
Funds, City of Bellingham Traffic Impact Fees, Port of Bellingham, and
private commercial contributions.
Accomplishments: Survey completed. Started environmental permitting.
Next Milestones: Delineate critical areas and address project limitations and constraints. Complete draft channelization plan and drainage design. Complete structural review. Continue coordinating efforts with agencies and involved parties.
