Completing bike lanes along this corridor will provide a multi-modal
transportation corridor extending from the northern portion of the city to
the city center. The Northwest Corridor is a direct arterial route to the
north end of the city with minimal grade. The addition of bike lanes will
provide increased safety for bicycle commuters and pedestrian safety at key
intersections fitting with both the
City of Bellingham Comprehensive Plan and the
Fountain District Urban Village Plan.
This project includes bike lane improvements as directed by City Council at
their meeting on 5/9/11. In addition to pavement markings, the road will be
resurfaced on Elm between Dupont and Northwest and on Dupont between Elm and
the Pickett Bridge. Pedestrian curb extensions will be added at Connecticut
and Monroe intersections. Work includes parking mitigation as required for
implementation.
Funds for the bike lanes come from the 2012 Transportation Benefit District Fund.
