The Eldridge Municipal Landfill site is about 19,000 square feet in
Little Squalicum Park in Bellingham, west of the Bellingham Technical
College campus parking lot.
In the mid- to late 1930s, the City of Bellingham used the area, now part of
the park, as a landfill for burning and burying local municipal waste. The
landfill operated for only a few years.
The Department of Ecology (DOE) is coordinating with the City and Environmental Protection Agency on cleanup of both the Eldridge Landfill and Little Squalicum Cleanup Site.
Accomplishments: Initial landfill cleanup substantially complete.
Next Milestones: Park restoration and construction close-out, followed by on-going monitoring. Complete an environmental study of the landfill site and determine if additional cleanup work is needed. Ecology expects to issue the resulting report for public review in 2012.
