Our uniformed officers are the people that respond to the 9-1-1 calls that you make. In 2000, our patrol officers were dispatched to 48,207 incidents. In 2004, we had 59,582 incidents dispatched. We have service around the clock, 365 days a year. Officers work a 10 hour 40 minute shift schedule. Shifts consist of working 5 days/off 4 days, working 5 days/off 4 then working 5 days/off 5 days. Squads of Officers work together and the start times are staggered to assure personnel are available to respond to calls any time of the day.
Patrol also includes crime scene investigators and K-9 officers. These specialized officers perform duties that aid regular patrol officers, and they are also assigned regular calls. Some patrol officers are also members of the SWAT team and can be called away from duty or days off, for high-risk calls.
Our new officers spend their first 13 weeks on patrol with a Field Training Officer. The FTO's are on-the-job teachers and mentors for the officers that have just completed the Washington State Police Training Academy in Burien, WA.
