Thank you to the hundreds of people from Bellingham and other Whatcom County communities who participated June 1 in Mayor Dan Pike's "listening session" on proposed shipping terminal at Cherry Point.
Pike said he hosted the "listening session" to help identify the scope of environmental review for SSA Marine's proposed Gateway Pacific Terminal at Cherry Point. At the meeting, he said his goals are to continue what already is a lively community dialogue about this proposal, prepare for formal environmental review, and to listen carefully to the perspectives of the Bellingham community.
Comments collected will be provided to the appropriate regulatory agencies to support a triple-bottom-line approach to reviewing the proposal when it comes forward, considering its environmental, social and economic impacts. While City officials are encouraging community dialog, it is important to note that the City government does not have regulatory authority over the proposed project. Those steps will be the responsibility of Whatcom County, state and federal agencies.
People who were unable to attend the meeting are invited to submit comments to Pike's office at mayorsoffice@cob.org.
