Completing a Whatcom Creek trail route along city streets linking several pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle connectors earned the City one of the first-ever Greenroads Silver Certifications. Greenroads require a variety of sustainable road design concepts and construction techniques and the Meador/Kansas/Ellis project was designed and constructed within budget while taking strategic steps to meet sustainability benchmarks.

While several different sustainable rating systems for public road projects are currently being developed, Greenroads is the first to complete specifications, pilot testing, and industry buy-in. Northshore Drive Roadway Improvements (PDF) served as a pilot test project for the rating system.
Both Bellingham and Oak Harbor were honored with certifications earlier this year.
