The Bellingham City Council's adopted a vision statement identifies long-term goals and strategies to reach those goals, as the essential foundation for the City's strategic planning and performance measure system.
The City Council's vision statement has as its basis a set of twenty- to fifty-year goals, or "legacy statements," that are supported by six- to twenty-year "strategic commitments."
The legacy statement adopted by City Council is:
"We are working today so future generations will benefit from..."
After seeking public feedback in a variety of ways, Council first adopted the Legacies and Strategic Commitments (PDF) in 2009. These high-level policy statements are intended to be visionary, reflecting the priority and emphasis of city government programs and services.
The City's performance measures program collects and displays community and City government measurement data associated with the Legacies and Strategic Commitments, to help the City and the community identify progress being made on stated goals. Council also intends that City expenditures be aligned with these goals, as well as department and program budgets and work plans.
