Six local photographers will receive public recognition for their work in the recent “Essence of Bellingham” Photo Competition, which drew more than 700 entries from area residents of all ages. Entries receiving highest honors are:
The winning entries and more are posted on the City of Bellingham website. Almost 200 of the entries submitted for the competition will be on display at the Whatcom Museum during the June 13 Downtown Gallery Walk.
The photographers who submitted the winning shots will be recognized by Bellingham Mayor Dan Pike and City Council members at the June 23 Bellingham City Council meeting. Entries also will be shown on BTV10 and added to the Whatcom Museum’s photographic collection.
“We are delighted so many people shared their vision of the “essence” of Bellingham,” said Bellingham Mayor Dan Pike. “With their photographs they are sharing what they love about Bellingham - its rich history, spectacular surroundings and vibrant neighborhoods – and preserving it for future generations as well."
Pike said the photo competition is an annual event, and he invites local shutterbugs to begin snapping photos now to enter in next year’s competition.
The submissions were juried by representatives from the Whatcom Museum and City of Bellingham, a Western Washington University photography professor, and a professional photographer/video producer.
Winning entries were selected based on photographic quality, subject matter, and how well the “essence of Bellingham” was captured.
