A statewide earthquake and tsunami drill on September 19 is one of several events planned locally for National Preparedness Month, designed to encourage everyone -- including homeowners, businesses, schools, health care providers and government agencies -- to review and practice emergency response plans and 9-1-1 procedures.
Washington State, Bellingham and Whatcom County officials will observe National Preparedness Month, Weather Radio Awareness Month and 9-1-1 Day, all in September.
A statewide earthquake drill and area-specific tsunami communications test is planned between 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on September 19.
On September 11, 9-1-1 Day will recognizes 9-1-1 public safety personnel for a job well done and the 9-1-1 capabilities available in Washington.
The September campaign also highlights use of weather radios for emergency
warning information. The campaign will encourage everyone to prepare for
severe weather events in advance of this coming winter, with special
emphasis on September 26, which is Storm Preparedness Day.
The City of Bellingham Office of Emergency Management and Whatcom County
Sheriffs Office Division of Emergency Management are working together to
prepare for disasters and encourage residents to participate in National
Preparedness Month events. Emergency officials also encourage participation
in two volunteer-based programs:
