Beginning in January 2006, hourly parking meters will be replaced with automated pay stations in several areas of downtown Bellingham. Affectionately known as LUKE by the company that manufactures them, the new pay stations accept credit and debit cards as well as US currency. Parking rates and fines also will increase beginning in January. All these changes are part of continued improvements to the way city officials manage parking services, intended to prevent "meter-feeding," increase access to parking spaces, boost customer convenience and keep parking revenues in line with inflation.
