Bellingham City Council member Gene Knutson was first elected in 1993 and
was elected by the Council Members to serve as Council President.
He has previously served on Council's Lake Whatcom Watershed Committee;
Parking, Capital Projects and Real Estate Committee; Parks and Recreation
Committee, and the Legislative Committee of the Whole. Council member
Knutson has several other Council assignments as well, including
appointments to the Port Marina Advisory Committee, and the Parks and
Recreation Board.
Gene Knutson has served on the Council for over 12 years and is a lifetime
resident of Bellingham. For the last 30 years he has worked for the
Bellingham Cold Storage Company. Deeply rooted in the community, he has a
very personal interest in Bellingham and its improvement. His many years of
service on the Council have ingrained in him the importance of keeping in
touch with citizens across all areas of the City, and listening to
everyone’s viewpoint, so that he can make the best decision for the
community. He knows that the citizens of Bellingham elected him and that
those are the people for whom he is working.
Council member Knutson has always been interested in serving the public,
driven by his desire to give something back to the community he grew up in.
Over the years his priorities have reflected this. He has worked to continue
the Greenways program, continued to set up more play fields for the youth in
Bellingham, and has made sure that the city is a safe place to live.
Protecting quality of life in in Bellingham, throughout our neighborhoods,
is the key issue he is focused on.
Some of the projects that Council member Knutson has worked on that have
been of special importance to him include his work to fund the Civic Field
renovation project, the purchase of the ice arena for use by the Soccer
Commission, the Depot Market Square project, and working with the Boys and
Girls Club towards the completion of their new building. Council member
Knutson’s current term ends in 2009.
