| The Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office, in partnership with the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration and the City of Bellingham, is conducting a Washington Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Symposium. The Symposium includes a Washington State Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Stakeholders’ Meeting and a Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Train-the-Trainer Session. The Stakeholders’ Meeting will take place on April 22 from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The Train-the-Trainer Session is scheduled for April 23, 2008. The agenda of the Stakeholders’ Meeting will include presentations by the U.S. Department of Transportation and other pipeline and hazardous materials safety programs aimed at bringing together emergency responders, pipeline operators and hazardous materials carriers to encourage cooperation, safe incident response procedures and safe incident reporting methods. Discussions will address a number of pipeline safety related topics including High Consequence Area identification, NASFM’s program to assist local fire officials in contributing objectively to safely locating and operating Liquefied Natural Gas facilities and tankers, pipeline safety community awareness, damage prevention and emergency responder training. Presentations will also be given on response methods for incidents involving wetlines on motor fuel tank trucks and on methods of increasing the safety of first responders by utilizing Geographic Information Systems technologies. All seminar participants will receive a textbook as well as a companion instructor CD-ROM containing interactive PowerPoint programs, scenarios, exercises and printable tests.
